Why is alternative
(alt-) text important?
Alt-text is read by screen readers so that visually impaired users can understand what is shown or communicated in images. Good alt text also helps search engines better categorize your images, improving your visibility.
When the alt-text clearly describes
what is depicted in an image, all visitors can better understand your website.
We distinguish three types of images:
-
Normal (informative) images:
If an image conveys important information, write a short sentence describing the main subject and context.
Tip: Describe only the essential parts of the image. You don’t need to mention every detail, just what is important for understanding.
Alternative text: A man presenting the previous
quarter’s sales results to a seated audience
- Hero-/Logo Pictures
If the image is a hero banner or logo containing important texts such as the name of an event, a company slogan, or branding information—simply include the visible text exactly as it appears in the alternative text.
Tip: Only include the text users need
to know. Do not repeat text that is already shown nearby in plain text on the
page.
Alt Text: Inovatex Accelecator powered by techpioneers
3. Decorative images
How do I set the alt text attribute
or declare the image as decorative?
For images used as
logos or banners, follow these steps:
- Upload the file as usual
- Open the file manager and locate the image
- Access the image’s properties page
a) Use the "Decorative" switch to mark the image as purely decorative. Once set, no further action is needed.
b) Use the alternative text field. For multilingual events, please provide a translation for each language.
How to add images with descriptions:
- Insert the image as usual.
- Click on the image until a blue border appears and the "Alt" field becomes visible (second button from the left below the image).
b) To delete, click on the alt field should then appear empty:
If the image is not decorative, please enter a text in the alt field
